BANGALORE: The state government has sought 10 days
time to furnish to the State Election Commission (SEC) , the reservation
list for posts of chairpersons to urban local bodies polls.
The cabinet meeting on Monday ratified the decision on review
petition that has been filed in the Supreme court on Saturday on the
polls. The apex court had ruled that state government should provide
reservation list to SEC on Monday and also said the election body has
the powers to conduct poll procedure itself based on 2007 reservation
pattern.
The cabinet discussed the issue threadbare and
decided that if elections are held according to 2007 roster list,
injustice would be meted out SC/ST/OBCs and women as the population of
these sections has grown manifold over last five years. The amendments
to various acts after 2008 have paved way for 50% reservation for women
in panchayat and ULBs. If elections are held according to 2007 list,
only 33% reservation will be applicable for women.
The government is said to have received support from
the opposition parties in conducting elections according to 2011 census
than roster system in 2007.
Banking on this
support from opposition parties, the government is thinking to pass an
unanimous resolution in both the Houses of the legislature seeking time
to hold elections according to latest census.
