State to discontinue aid to political sufferers

KOLKATA, 18 JAN: The state government has decided to discontinue
assistance to political sufferers which was introduced during the Left
regime. In future this will be restricted to only freedom fighters. The
state government provides this pension to freedom fighters who have been
jailed for six months or were absconding for the same period and can
produce the warrant or a recommendation from another freedom fighter.
After the CPI-M came to power it provided the pension to its workers or
their family members from the year 1952. Gangasagar development
The state Cabinet will approve a proposal from the urban development department to earmark near 1225 acres of area under Sagar Police Station under Gangasagar Planning Area and the Gangasagar Development Authority in order to develop the area and exploit its tourism potential.
The area has lakhs of pilgrims visiting it for a dip during Makar Sankranti. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee had visited the Sagar Islands last year and had promised several projects. sns
