Politics through Food habits ISP II May 2012

Politics through Food Habits

Ram Puniyani

In the middle of April 2012 Osmania University (OU) witnessed an unusual violence on the issue of eating beef. A section of dalit students' were demanding that University Hostels should have beef on the menu. They also organized a beef festival in which a large number of students ate beef biryani. The festivity was not to last long as the ABVP, the student wing of RSS, created rampage, a student was knifed, a bus was torched and ruckus was created in the university. The Vice Chancellor of OU knelt to the aggressive cow protectors and said that beef will not be introduced in the menu.
Just a month ago the in the Kurmaguda area of Hyderabad a group of youth associated with Hindu communal group were arrested for throwing beef inside a Hanuman temple, who later spread the word that Muslims have defiled our temple and turned their guns against the hapless minority, torched few buses. A little while ago the ruling BJP government in Madhya Pradesh had introduced a bill prohibiting the consumption of beef in the state. Other BJP ruled states in one form or the other are introducing legislations, which prohibit the slaughter of cow.
The place where Muslims were butchered mercilessly under the Chief mastership of Modi the 'care of cow' has gone one step up and state has opened centers for cataract and dental surgery of the Mother Cow. The goal of the Hindu state of Gujarat under Modi is to open more such centers so that Mother cow does not have to travel more than three kilometers for accessing these services, this while innumerable victims of Gujarat carnage, are yet to recover from the trauma of the carnage, aided by the apathy of state.
So far most of these legislations and the accompanying propaganda have been directed primarily against Muslim minority, which is demonized as the butchers and eaters of 'our holy cow'. The OU episode shows the other side of the agenda of cow politics. While there had been cases of murders of dalits on the pretext of skinning a dead cow (Jhajjar, Haryana) and VHP defending the act saying that cow is too holy to spare the dalits. Still primarily it is the Muslim community which has been the target of propaganda emanating from RSS- Combine stable.
With dalits, the other target of RSS combine, the issue is not just of identity. It is related to the livelihood and food habits of dalits-Adivasis. The cow as a symbol of RSS combine has been in the fore since the rise of communal politics during the British rule. As such the cow has been in the forefront of communal battles of upper castes in India earlier also. The Brahmanical reaction to rise of Buddhism was countered by putting forward the symbol of cow. Some Dalit scholars hold that cow was cleverly chosen and one of the reasons cow stole a march over the equally useful buffalo was its color. It is not a coincidence that the dark skinned people have faced the wrath of the elite in one form or the other.
The scholars of Vedic India Prof D.N.Jha, Dr. Pandurang Vaman Kane and champion of social justice Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, all have pointed out that cow was verily eaten during Vedic period. With the rise of agricultural society, and need for preserving cattle wealth; the religions-ideologies promoting non-violence in the form of Jainism and Buddhism came up and campaigned against senseless sacrifice of cow in Vedic yagnas (sacrificial ritual).
The current communal politics has twin agenda. At surface it wants to subjugate the minorities and is using the emotive issues to create a mass hysteria against minorities. Lord Ram and Cow are the major tools of communal political mobilization. While the supporters of RSS combine generously donate for the welfare of cow, it is the dalits who practically take care of the grazing and other needs of Holy mother. Last some time a pressure is being built up culturally and politically that beef eating communities give up this integral part of their habit.
The food patterns are changing under intense propaganda still as of now the consumption of beef in India is higher than that of mutton and chicken put together. Its export is also a major business. The RSS combine on one side aims to subjugate the Minorities and on the other wants to maintain the status quo of social relationship of caste and gender. These are subtle and overt maneuvers implemented through political and cultural conduits. Attitude of communal politics to dalits has been a complex one. The anti dalit violence of 1980 against reservation, the anti OBC violence of 1986 against promotion of OBCs in jobs, and its strengthening of Kamandal politics (Rath Yatra and the Babri demolition) in response to Mandal were a part of this.
At another level the strategy is to co-opt dalits into Hindutva fold. From middle of decades of 1980s RSS has activated Samajik Samrasta Manch (Social Harmony Forum) which has been mobilizing dalits around that. The Gurus like Sri Sri Ravishanker have been saying that there should be harmony between upper and lower caste, while he keeps quiet about the prevalent social injustice in various forms. The aim of the communal politics is to maintain the status quo of caste and gender.
Through Samajik Samrasta Manch the message of undermining caste atrocities and social injustice is actively propagated. Supplementing this is the cultural assertion and imposition of elite norms on the whole society. Food habits are a part of culture and for large sections of dalits and Adiviasis beef had been an integral part of their food. Incidentally there is a vigorous campaign to promote vegetarianism and denigrate non vegetarian food practices.
While the large section of dalits is struggling for social and economic justice, a section of dalits is undergoing the process of sanskritization as well. It is in this light that the symbols of dalit assertion in the matters of food habits and cultural expressions are being attacked openly. The compromised state apparatus is not able to stand up to this onslaught of communal politics to preserve the social and democratic rights of dalits and other marginalized sections of society, be it the matters of their physical security, questions of equity and food habits. It is a blatant attempt to manipulate culture, to impose elite norms, through influencing the food habits, which are so much cultural in their nature.
It seems Mother Cow may be the major emotive weapon to be used for the politics deriving its legitimacy from Hindu religions' identity. Interestingly it reveals the twin goals of this politics. At surface it is to reduce the minorities to a status of second class citizen and at deeper level to subjugate dalits at social, political and cultural level.

Saturday, 12 May 2012 17:38

Mamata beeps SMS of subtle shift
- CM issues guidelines to party leaders to improve image

ARNAB GANGULY AND KINSUK BASU
Calcutta, May 11: Mamata Banerjee today asked her party leaders to follow several guidelines, some of which suggested that the chief minister is indirectly acknowledging the adverse fallout of recent controversies and is seeking to avert a replay.
The chief minister also made an unusual request— "do not seek appointment through SMS" — that appeared to reflect a realisation after one year in power that governance does not mean micro-managing each and every issue that crops up.
Most topical among the directives is the one that asked party leaders not to create disturbances in educational institutions (see chart).
An initial wave of campus anarchy and a former MLA's alleged attack on a teacher — which prompted an audacious and astounding defence from Writers' premises by a minister — had overshadowed or neutralised some initiatives the government had undertaken to clean up the education mess.
"Political leaders should not go to colleges, schools, police stations, block development offices and create disturbances. You are political people. You have intelligence. Apply your mind. Discuss within the party. Don't do anything that will turn people hostile," the chief minister told a meeting of Trinamul officials and elected representatives today.
Wrapped in another exhortation to "follow the people" was a statement that "amader acharan thik korte hobe (we have to correct our behaviour)" — the closest Mamata has come yet to an admission that some corrective measures are needed. "For the actions of one or two members, the entire party can't get a bad name. I won't allow that," she added. The chief minister had earlier issued similar warnings against extortion syndicates but reports from the ground suggest the absence of follow-through action.
However, standing amid party faithful, Mamata played up to their expectations and did not betray any sign of remorse over specific instances, especially one that tarnished the government's image the most. The chief minister broke her silence on the arrest of a Jadavpur professor for circulating an email that lampooned her, insisting that the image was not a cartoon but part of an attempt at "character assassination". ( )
Mamata's appeal against text messages betrayed the uncommon pulls and pressures — largely an outcome of her ability and willingness to connect with the people — under which she is working.
In rest of India, few chief ministers are expected to spell out that text messages demanding appointments should not be sent, especially at unearthly hours. But such a diktat becomes a necessity in Bengal whose chief executive takes pride in directly connecting with every individual and handling every problem herself.
"SMS kore amaar appointment chaiben na. Ratri ektar samay SMS kore samay chaichhe. Bolchhe amake oi samaytai dite hobe. Dine 500 SMS-er jabab dite parbo na(don't seek appointments with me through SMS. Even at 1am, I get text messages seeking appointments. The sender says he has to be given the appointment at exactly the hour he wants. I cannot respond to 500 SMSes a day)," Mamata said.
The chief minister listed the alternative channels through which messages can be conveyed to her. "In case of any problem, get in touch with Mukul (Roy). If Mukul is busy in Parliament, then Bobby (Firhad Hakim). If Bobby is not available, then Madan (Mitra) or Saugata (Roy) or Purnendu (Bose) or Malay (Ghatak). They will pass the message to me," she said.
These changes may not appear noteworthy but they do represent a change, compared with the initial days at Writers' that were marked by late hours and surprise visits to hospitals on way to work.
But of late, a Trinamul leader pointed out, she is more "settled" and is sticking to a more "regular" routine.
Earlier, she would stay till well past 9 at night and keep her ministers waiting as well. "Now she leaves by around 7 at night after reaching Writers' around 11.30 in the morning," a minister said.
The chief minister now mostly follows the timetable drawn up by her secretariat. "Mamata's appointments are mostly scheduled now," said a senior minister. He added with a chuckle: "She no longer goes off on a sight-seeing spin all over the city on her way home."
That does not mean Mamata is cut off. For instance, during the Rabindra Jayanti celebrations at Cathedral Road on Tuesday, Mamata repeatedly stepped outside the shamiana and met people on the road, checking whether they were enjoying the programme.

99.88628643517% of infants are not saved by vaccines!

99.88628643517% of infants are not saved by vaccines!

The vaccination program the CDC has created does, in fact, save thousands of lives each year. But the chance that it will save your baby's life is infintesimally small.

Let's do some math!

Bear with me here...

The CDC vaccinates our children against 14 diseases before 15 months of age. We're all told that this is vitally important, and the math looks good when you look at the populace of the US as a whole. But let's look at each individual disease.

There is a lot of math below. Here's the breakdown: I'm going to give you the name of a disease, it's prevalence before the vaccine was introduced, it's prevalence today, and it's lethality. The percentage chance of the vaccine saving your infant's life lies somewhere between the product of the lethality and the pre-vaccine prevalence, and the product of the lethality and the post-vaccine prevalence. This is because, while being unvaccinated, your child is more vulnerable than a vaccinated child (more than the post-vaccine prevalence), the fact that the vaccine has removed a signifcant number of sources of the disease makes the disease much hard to catch (less than the pre-vaccine prevalence). There is good reason to believe that the smaller number is the more accurate result, but it's debatable, so I'm showing the entire range. For simplicity's sake, I'm rounding up to .01% in cases where a number would be smaller than that (many lethality ratings).

Haemophilius Influenzae type B (HIB)
Before the vaccine was introduced: 60 cases per 100,000 (.06% of the population caught this disease)
After the vaccine took effect: 1 case per 100,000 (.001% caught it).
Lethality: 6% of people who caught this disease died of it.

That means: Your child's unvaccinated chance of dying to HIB is 0006%-.0036%

Pneumococcus
Before the vaccine was introduced: 33 cases per 100,000 (.033%)
After the vaccine took effect: 13 per 100,000 (.013%)
Lethality: 14% fatal.

That means: Your child's unvaccinated chance of dying to Pneumococcus is .00182%-.00462%

Meningococcus
Before the vaccine was introduced: 12 cases per 100,000 (.012%)
After the vaccine took effect: 5 cases per 100,000 (.005%)
Lethality: 14% fatal.

That means: Your child's unvaccinated chance of dying to Meningococcus is .0007%-.00168%

Hepatitus B
Before the vaccine was introduced: 115 cases per 100,000 (.115%)
After the vaccine took effect: 20 per 100,000 (.02%)
Lethality: 25% fatal.

That means: Your child's unvaccinated chance of dying to Hepatitus B is .005%-.02875%
It's worth pointing out that: This is an STD, transmitted exactly like AIDS. If you believe you can teach your child not to catch AIDS, this disease is already out of the picture.

Rotavirus
Before the vaccine was introduced: 13,000 cases in 100,000 (13%)
After the vaccine took effect: unknown -- the vaccine is too new to have statistically significant "after" numbers.
Lethality: .01% lethal.

That means: Not determinable due to the recent addtion of this vaccine.
It's worth pointing out that: Rotavirus is diarrhea, and nothing more. Its most extreme form is treatable with "hydration therapy" -- which is nothing more than giving your infant some sugary or salty water to rehydrate him or her.

Diphtheria
Before the vaccine was introduced: 200 per 100,000 (.2%)
After the vaccine took effect: .001 per 100,000 (.000001%)
Lethality: 10%

That means: Your child's unvaccinated chance of dying to Diphtheria is .0000001%-.02%

Tetanus
Before the vaccine was introduced: 3.9 per 100,000 (.0039%)
After the vaccine took effect: .15 per 100,000 (.00015%)
Lethality: 20%

That means: Your child's unvaccinated chance of dying to Tetanus is .00003%-.00078%

Pertussis
Before the vaccine was introduced: 100 per 100,000 (.1%)
After the vaccine took effect: 3.01 per 100,000 (.00301%)
Lethality: .01%

That means: Your child's unvaccinated chance of dying to Pertussis is .0000301%-.001%

Poliio
Before the vaccine was introduced: 37 per 100,000 (.00037%)
After the vaccine took effect: .01 per 100,000 (.0001%)
Lethality: .01%

That means: Your child's unvaccinated chance of dying to Polio (x) is .00001%-.000037%

Influenza
Before the vaccine was introduced: 16,000 per 100,000 (16%)
After the vaccine took effect: unknown -- the vaccine is too new to have statistically significant "after" numbers.
Lethality: .01%

That means: Not determinable due to the recent addtion of this vaccine.
It's worth pointing out that: Influenza is the flu, nothing more. The flu virus mutates so quickly that the pharmaceutical companies' ability to produce vaccine will never be able to 'catch up' and get the flu under control. Unlike every other vaccine, which was produced to bring a potentially lethal disease down to easily managable levels, the flu vaccine is literally a joke. It's a vaccine against last year's flu virus, which by it's nature has already mutated, rendering the vaccine almost useless.

Measles
Before the vaccine was introduced: 270 per 100,000 (.27%)
After the vaccine took effect: .15 per 100,000 (.00015%)
Lethality: .01%

That means: Your child's unvaccinated chance of dying to Measles is .000015%-.027%

Mumps
Before the vaccine was introduced: 75 per 100,000 (.075%)
After the vaccine took effect: .09 per 100,000 (.00009%)
Lethality: .01%

That means: Your child's unvaccinated chance of dying to Mumps is .000009%-.0075%
It's worth pointing out that: In 2006, an "epidemic" of mumps broke out in the midwest. 84% of the people who caught mumps during that "epidemic" were vaccinated.

Rubella
Before the vaccine was introduced: 58 per 100,000 (.058%)
After the vaccine took effect: .5 per 100,000 (.0005%)
Lethality: .01%

That means: Your child's unvaccinated chance of dying to Rubella is .00005%-.0058%

Varicella (aka Chicken Pox)
Before the vaccine was introduced: 1,300 per 100,000 (1.3%)
After the vaccine took effect: 100 per 100,000 (.1%)
Lethality: .01%

That means: Your child's unvaccinated chance of dying to Varicella is .001%-.013%

All right, so, we now have a range of lethality for every disease we vaccinate against. Here comes the fun part. I'm going to calculate, using the UPPER END (before any vaccinations began!) numbers, what the total percentage chance of your child dying from the total of all of these diseases is. For those of you not familiar with how statistics work, a very brief explanation: I'm going to multiply the chance of your child living despite the disease attempting to kill it (for example, with Varicella above, your child has, at the minimum, a 99.99999987% chance of living despite the disease's existence) by the chance of dying from each other disease in this list. Obviously, each multiplication is going to reduce the total percentage chance of survival a little bit -- let's see how far down it goes. Of course, I have to leave out Rotavirus and Influenza, but neither of them are meaningfully lethal in the First World regardless.

100%-.0036% = 99.9964% to avoid death by HIB
100%-.00462% = 99.99538% to avoid death by Pneumococcus
100%-.00168% = 99.99832% to avoid death by Meningococcus
100%-.02875% = 99.97125% to avoid death by Hepatitus B
(no data for Rotavirus)
100%-.02% = 99.98% to avoid death by Diphtheria
100%-.00078% = 99.99922% to avoid death by Tetanus
100%-.001% = 99.999% to avoid death by Pertussis
100%-.000037% = 99.999963% to avoid death by Polio
(no data for Influenza)
100%-.027% = 99.973% to avoid death by Measles
100%-.0075% = 99.9925% to avoid death by Mumps
100%-.0058% = 99.9942% to avoid death by Rubella
100%-.013% = 99.987% to avoid death by Varicella

And, the big number after all this, the grand product of all of these narrowly-avoided deaths is: 99.88628643517%

Which means that, with no vaccinations at all, your infant has a 0.11371356483% chance of dying to one of these horrible diseases. (Remember, this is using all of the upper-end numbers. The actual number is statistically significantly lower!)

Kind of makes you feel like the CDC is playing your fears like a fiddle, doesn' t it?

So, ask yourself: assuming you fear a diagnosis of "autistic" only 1% as much as you fear your child's early death...do you feel like there is at least an eleven percent chance that the autism-from-vaccines theory is correct? If you do, the math seems strongly to indicate that vaccinating your child is not in your best interest.

Economist Montek Singh Ahluwalia, who arrived as the chief guest of the 72nd convocation ceremony at the city-based at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) on Thursday afternoon, was greeted with placards and slogans, even as a small group of students protested against the Planning Commission (PC) deputy chairman.

In a statement to the press, the students stated the wrongful estimation of poverty line, the non-implementation of the SC/ST special component plan and the diversion of SC/ST funds for infrastructure of Commonwealth Games as some of the reasons for their protest. The students also protested Ahluwalia's recent comments about the privatisation of higher education only a few days ago in Dehli.

Slogans like "Planning Commission hai, hai" and "Montek Singh down, down" rang the air as Ahluwalia's car drove into the campus, with sources confirming that the PC chairman was "visibly upset" as he drew down the window of his car.

In a letter drafted to Ahluwalia, the students stated their objection to his comments on stopping the funding for universities and raising tuition fees across the board. A TISS research scholar, Rupesh Kumar said, "We protested to show our disapproval of the policies of the Planning Commission. Politically and ideologically, we do not align to the commission's policies."

Earlier in the day, the college administration asked students to have a one-hour meet with Ahluwalia, but they declined.

"The unbridled expansion of the private sector will only exacerbate inequalities in higher education across socio-economic groups, genders and regions. In view of the above realities, only a public funded education system can best ensure equal access to all," the letter stated.

Ambedkar cartoon row: MPs stall House, Sibal apologises

Amid uproar in Parliament over a cartoon of B R Ambedkar in NCERT textbooks, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal today "apologised" over the objectionable content, saying he has directed removal of the material and stoppage of distribution of books. He appealed to political parties not to make it an issue for vote bank politics. "...I am willing to personally apologise for it though I was not the minister at that time in 2006. I was involved in the publication of the books," Sibal told reporters outside Parliament House.
He said there was no question of anybody trying to malign Ambedkar or anybody trying to make fun of him because that "I think will be against the secular ethos of our country".

Sibal said much before the issue came to Parliament, he had taken action on it and set up a committee to look at the entire gamut of cartoons in textbooks and their content to ensure material of this nature is taken out of textbooks.

"This issue came to my notice sometime towards April and we sought an explanation from NCERT and after the explanation had come, we took the decision on April 27 that this particular cartoon should be withdrawn from NCERT textbooks on political science," he said.

Sibal said the government today further decided that the textbooks which contain the cartoon shall not be distrubuted. The wholesalers, he said, have also been asked to stop distribution of the textbooks.

Predatory Capitalism Failed

Predatory Capitalism Failed

Independent observers knew it long ago. Today's global economic crisis provides added confirmation. In 2008, a staunch champion of the system expressed second thoughts. More on him below.

An ideology based on inequality, injustice, exploitation, militarism, and imperial wars eventually self-destructs or gets pushed.

Growing evidence in America and Europe show systemic unaddressed problems too grave to ignore. They remain so despite millions without jobs, savings, homes or futures.

Imagine nations governed by leaders letting crisis conditions fester. Imagine voters reelecting them despite demanding change. OWS aside, one day perhaps rage will replace apathy in America. The latest jobs report alone provides incentive enough to try and then some.

On May 4, the Labor Department reported 115,000 new jobs. It way overstated the true number. Official figures belie the dire state of things. At most, two-thirds the headline total were created. Even that's in doubt.

Most were low-pay, part-time, or temp positions with few or no benefits. Decades ago, workers would have avoided them. Today, there's no choice.

The report also showed economic decline. Expect much worse ahead. In 2008, Main Street Americans experienced Depression. It rages today. Poverty's at record levels. Real unemployment approaches 1930s numbers. Dire conditions are worsening.

Announced job cuts are increasing. Hiring plans are down. Compared to year ago levels, they're off 80%. Income is stagnant for those lucky to have work. The private diffusion index measuring growth fell sharply month-over-month.

The unemployment rate decline reflects discouraged workers dropping out. They want jobs but can't find them. The Labor Department considers them non-persons. They're not counted to make official figures look better.

Moreover, the broad based Household Survey showed employment dropping 169,000. It was the second consecutive monthly decline. The Labor Department uses a "population and payroll concept adjusted" calculation. Doing so tries to compare monthly payroll and household figures.

The measure plunged 495,000 in April after dropping 418,000 in March. The calculation represented the largest back-to-back decline since late 2009.

At 63.6%, America's labor force hit its lowest level since September 1981. Since then, population totals grew from 229 million to about 312 million today. The state of the nation today reflects lots of people facing few jobs, and no policy to create them.

The employment/population ratio stands at 58.4%. Alone, it represents a shocking testimony to failure. So do other data. Long-term unemployment remains near record levels. Credit deleveraging continues. Housing's in its worst ever depression. Prices keep falling. Inventories of unsold homes are huge. Foreclosures are at epidemic levels.

State and local downsizing continues. Personal income suffers. Conditions are bad and worsening.

On May 4, Pimco's Mohamed El-Erian headlined his Financial Times article "Confirmed: America's jobs crisis," saying:

"Friday's US jobs data sound a warning that should be heard well beyond economists and market watchers."

Americans with jobs have poor ones. Wage growth is stagnant. Purchasing power can't keep up with inflation. For ordinary Americans, secular income headwinds blow at gale force strength.

Crisis conditions today make "a mockery of the published unemployment rate of 8.1 per cent....The economic implications are clear." At a time, Europe's recession deepens, America's declining.

Risks are increasing. A "potential (austerity caused) year-end 'fiscal cliff' (may) suck out some 4 per cent of GDP in purchasing power, and do so in a disorderly fashion."

Instead of addressing crisis conditions responsibly, political Washington campaigns for reelection, and plans huge domestic budget cuts when stimulus help is needed.

Main Street Americans are pushed to the edge. Potential "social consequences" suggest "the possibility....of a lost generation."

Unemployed teenagers "face the risk of going from being unemployed to becoming unemployable." Today's reality is bleak. It reflects "a multi-faceted unemployment crisis that politicians, both in America and Europe, are failing to comprehend, unite around, and respond to."

"I worry greatly that facts on the ground will unfortunately warrant future analyses to be even more disheartening."

Alan Greenspan's Too Late to Matter Mea Culpa

As Fed chairman for nearly two decades (1987 - 2006), he engineered today's crisis. Some call him the Maestro of Misery for good reason. Those benefitting most sing his praises. In 2008, he had second thoughts.

A longtime Ayn Rand disciple, he strayed noticeably in October 2008 House testimony. Her libertarian views influenced his. She championed regulatory free markets. So did Greenspan. He practiced what she preached.

Perhaps House Oversight and Government Reform Committee members couldn't believe their ears. He acknowledged his worldview failure, saying:

"You know, that's precisely the reason I was shocked, because I have been going for 40 yeas or more with very considerable evidence that it was working exceptionally well."

While trying to have it both ways, he admitted his faith in regulatory free markets was shaken, saying:

"I made a mistake in presuming that the self-interests of organizations, specifically banks and others, were such as that they were best capable of protecting their own shareholders and their equity in the firms."

"The Federal Reserve had as good an economic organization as exists. If all those extraordinarily capable people were unable to foresee the development of this critical problem...we have to ask ourselves: Why is that? And the answer is that we're not smart enough as people. We just cannot see events that far in advance."

In his book "Secrets of the Temple: How the Federal Reserve Runs the Country" William Grieder called Greenspan one of "the most duplicitous figures to serve in modern American government."

He used "his exalted status as economic wizard (to) regularly corrupt the political dialogue by sowing outrageously false impressions among gullible members of Congress and adoring financial reporters."

His ideology was hokum. Somehow he managed a Columbia doctorate without its dissertation requirement. His economic consulting firm flopped. It faced liquidation. He closed shop to join the Fed after serving earlier in the Reagan, Nixon and Ford administrations.

His background in government got him his job. His inability to forecast made him a perfect Fed choice. So did his reliability to serve monied interests over populist ones.

Saying he got it wrong after the fact hardly matters. Where was he when it counted. In 2006, Bernanke replaced him. He made a bad situation worse. Since 2008, he more than tripled the Fed's balance sheet from about 6% of GDP to 20%.

His day of reckoning approaches. Perhaps in future congressional testimony, he'll address his own shortcomings. Doing it when it counts matters. After the fact turns memoirs into best-sellers.

His cross to bear and Greenspan's could fill volumes. Millions their policies harmed won't line up to buy them.

How can they? They're broke, on their own, out of luck, and unreceptive to hear defrocked Fed chairmen say they're sorry. If so, they'd have done it right in the first place.

Saturday, 12 May 2012 16:17
