PM’s nod for senior citizens’ council

NEW DELHI, 1 FEB: The Prime Minister, Mr Manmohan Singh, today approved a National Council for Senior Citizens to advise the Central and state governments on issues concerning welfare of senior citizens and enhancement of quality of their life. The Council would give advice on policies, programmes and legislative measures; promotion of physical and financial security; health; independent and productive living; and awareness generation and community mobilisation.
The Council would be chaired by the minister of social justice & empowerment. The other members would include the minister of state in the social justice ministry, the oldest members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, representatives of five state governments (one each from the North, South, East, West & North Eastern Regions) and one Union Territory by rotation, five representatives each from senior citizens’ associations, pensioners’ association, NGOs working for senior citizens and experts, and five senior citizens who have distinguished themselves in various fields. The Council would be anchored in the ministry of social justice & empowerment. sns
