Fire at Airtel office cripples network
MUMBAI: Airtel subscribers in Mumbai and some surrounding areas like Pune woke up on Tuesday morning to a network outage that paralyzed their mobile and Internet services for most part of the day. The country's largest mobile services operator, by subscriber base, said the outage was the result of a fire in its central POP (point of presence) location in Malad. While broadband and voice services were largely restored by evening, mobile subscribers were unable to use data services like mobile internet and Blackberry messenger. Till late evening, some customers complained of getting sporadic services.
"Our teams have been working since morning to normalize all affected services. Mobile voice, Blackberry and SMS services have largely been restored and are stabilizing. We are working towards restoring 2G & 3G data services later at night. However, for enterprise services like IPLC, leased lines, MPLS and Internet services, the restoration work is in progress. These services are likely to be restored in the next 24 hours. We deeply regret the inconvenience caused to our customers," said a Bharti Airtel spokesperson in a statement sent in the evening. Airtel has about 3.7 million subscribers in Mumbai and 9.2 million customers in Maharashtra.
In October this year, Research in Motion (RIM), which makes the popular Blackberry smartphones, faced its worst-ever outage affecting millions of customers across the world. The Canadian smartphone maker drew flak for the way its management handled the crisis hurting its brand image globally.
